Modern stores was started way back in 1951 as a small retail shop by Shri Janardhan Rao .  From the beginning, he had a burning desire to create a unique store which will be regularly sought after by customers.  The store adopted the principle of stocking items which were most essential and commonly required by the customer. The regular need of the people were constantly analysed and every such item was sourced painstakingly. 

Over the years, Modern Stores became a go-to place where you can get anything you wanted. Prompt Customer service and close interaction became a standard and it is this fact that made it one of the most popular stores in Ooty.  Periodic expansion was made to meet the increasing needs of customers and today Modern Stores is established at a very spacious facility in the heart of town on the Garden Road.

There is  a wide range of Confectionery products including different kinds of Breads, Specialty Breads, Sourdough Breads, Buns, Cakes, Cookies, Rolls, Tarts, Brownies, Croissants, Marshmallows, etc. The bakery products are made daily fresh without using preservatives and with the best ingredients. All products from  the bakery  are vegetarian. Other products include Patte de Fruits, Gourmet Popcorns, macaroons, etc. In addition, there is a wide range of south Indian snacks like Kruthi Udipi mixture, Murrukkus, Maddur vada,etc., which are made with special Udipi recipes.
